Zarins-Knight Traveling Fellowship

The purpose of the Zarins-Knight Traveling Fellowship is to promote the advancement of medical care in Latvia by enabling Latvian doctors to travel abroad and study the latest developments in medicine. Created in 2003 by a grant from Mr. Norman Knight, the Fellowship was named in honor of Drs. Bertram and Christopher Zarins and their contributions to Latvian medical care.

Each year a committee selects 4 to 6 applicants who are either physicians or medical students within two years of receiving their medical degrees.

A Leg To Stand On (ALTSO) in Latvia

The Latvian Medical Foundation supports projects in Latvia that provide child amputees with modern prosthetic devices.

In April 2007 a team of Latvian prosthetics experts that included Prof. Evgueni Dukendjiev, Dr. Tatjana Ogurcova, and Vita Dumpe traveled to India to visit the A Leg To Stand On (ALTSO) Clinic in Ahmedabad. The trip was funded by the Nelss Corporation and LMF.

The purposes of the trip were to establish a relationship between prosthetists in Latvia and India, exchange information on prosthetic materials and techniques, learn how to set up and operate a modern ALTSO facility, and explore the possibility of establishing in Latvia a facility similar to the ALTSO Clinic in India.
